Maquoketa Record, Oct. 8, 1903.
SMITH: - Cornelia Rich was born at Richville, New York, July 27, 1824, and was married Dec. 23, 1846, to Charles Fox, who died at Harrisons Landing, Va., in a field hospital July 12, 1862, with fever contracted in the Chickahominy swamp in Virginia. He was lieutenant in command of Co. I, 92d regiment, New York state volunteers. There were born to them two children – Francis Fox Spencer, of Maquoketa, and Charles C. Fox, of Chicago, Ill. She was again married, Nov. 3, 1864, to Mr. H. E. Smith of Lowville, N. Y., by whom there were no children. They came to Maquoketa in the fall of 1878, making their home with her daughter from that time until her death Friday, Oct. 2, 1903. Mr. Smith died June 6, 1881, in Redlands, California, while on a visit to his son. Mrs. Smith was a woman of rare mental attainments and untiring industry, one who to know intimately was a privilege; a sunny, cheerful patient temperament at no time failed her, through her long and intensely painful illness. Home to her was the dearest spot on earth and she made it doubly dear for those who composed the family. May we again meet her in the “Holy City,” when our earthly pilgrimage is over. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon from the residence of R. A. Spencer, where she had resided so many years, Rev. A. T. Young officiated and interment took place in Mt. Hope cemetery attended by many friends and also the woman’s club and the order of the Eastern Star of which she was a valued member.
