Death of Wm. Moon Severe Blow to the Community.
William Henry Moon was born in Maquoketa, Iowa, April 5th, 1858, in a building that stood near where the Rice Opera House now stands. He was the son of Wm. Germain Moon and Lydia Johnson Moon, his mother being a niece of President Andrew Johnson. His parents being pioneers here they homesteaded south of Delmar, Clinton Co., Iowa, where William grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Barbara E. Juel, July 1st, 1877. To this union was born Henry J. Moon now of Chicago, Ill., and they also raised an adopted daughter who is now Mrs. Addie Hawkins and lives at LaPorte, Minnesota. Dec. 23rd, 1907, he married Lillie Heidt, to this union was born a son Harold who is still at home.
Mr. Moon passed away at his home near Hurstville, Saturday afternoon, January 22nd, after a very short illness. Besides his wife, two sons and adopted daughter he is survived by a brother Dan Moon of Marion, Iowa, a brother Fred Moon of Clinton, Iowa, and a sister Mrs. Anna Jellison of Marion, Iowa, a step-daughter Mrs. Carl Selzer of Vancouver Island B. C., also by a great number of personal friends as it has ever been the allotment for one local citizen to have. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., and 2 p.m. at the M. E. church, conducted by Rev. Frank C. Worcester, and burial in Delmar cemetery.
In the passing of William Moon, Jackson County loses one of its greatest and best citizens. In his family life he was an ideal husband and father. It was his nature to be a home lover and therefore his home was an ideal spot, as any one who was ever in his home could easily testify, and he was a type of citizen where his passing was not only a great earthly loss to his family but also to the people who were his neighbors, friends and patrons. He was an active stock buyer in this locality for something like 30 years and has distributed more money among the stock raisers here than any other person ever has. His modesty and extreme honesty made him a much better stock buyer for the public than for himself. It was his price to pay well for what he purchased and drops in the market often were against him but by that rule of dealing he always had a clear conscience which was dearer to him than money. He was clean in speech, in mind and in his dealings with his fellow men. It would be hard to figure out another local resident who would be missed in local business affairs as much as will William Moon. During his life he has made a record that few people can come up to, he had a disposition that few are blessed with. He was by nature so fair that it was natural for him to deal fair, and if he ever had a living enemy it would be hard to figure how it happened. His was a case to know him was to love and admire him. And though he is dead yet will he live in the memory and admiration if his host of acquaintances.
