MONMOUTH

Catherine Lavina Post, daughter of Thomas and Serepta Post, was born at Canton, Jackson county, Iowa, December 12, 1862. Her life, for the whole, was mostly lived in the community of her birth. She belonged to a family of which four brothers and four sisters survive. She was the mother of nine children, and became the foster mother of five grandchildren, Robert, George, Arch, Howard and Frank, the last named being only five weeks old when his mother was removed by death and the burden then came on her.

For 49 years this March 3, she had walked with the husband of her youth, Mr. Israel Edwards, enduring all the privations, sorrows and disappointments of the years. There were many joys, too, and not the least of them came when the aged couple were able to go again by themselves and live their own life. It was only for a short time. The life of sacrifice had told on the strength, and the heart that had suffered so much, broke under the weight of care.

She passed away in the early morning of April 2, at the age of 64 years, 3 months and 19 days. She leaves a fragrant life of service behind for the memory of her loved ones, and a good example of motherly devotion to all that have known her.

The following are the sisters and brothers: Mrs. Matthew Bickford, James Post, Mrs. Levi Bickford, Mrs. Tilman Edwards, Mrs. Mary Gaddis, Allen Conley, Wm. Conley and Israel Conley.

The sons and daughters were all present at the funeral except one that died in infancy, and Ira, who passed away a few years since. They are Elijah, Esther Hall, Effie, Mrs. Wm. Coburn, Thomas H., Archie, Jerome P. of Anamosa, and Delia, Mrs. Ferdinand Lynch of Dubuque. Besides these with the broken hearted husband and father, there are 28 living grandchildren and many other relatives, and friends who have known her during the more than 60 years that her life was lived in this community. “She hath done what she could.”

The funeral service was held Monday afternoon at the Monmouth church, Rev. D. C. Perry, the pastor, officiating, with burial in the Monmouth cemetery.
