Jackson Sentinel, October 8, 1903.

DIED

Dunham-
At his late home on Pleasant Street in Maquoketa, Sunday, October 4th, 1903, at 6 a. m., of hemorrhage caused by a paroxysm of coughing, Louis H. Dunham, aged 66 years, 5 months and 29 days.

The deceased was born in Brookfield, Jefferson Co., Pa, April 5, 1837, where he grew to manhood, completing his education in his native town. In 1856, his father, the Hon. Louis B. Dunham, came to Maquoketa and in company with Dr. O. von Schrader started a private bank which subsequently merged into the State Bank of Iowa and later into the First National Bank of Maquoketa. In 1857 Louis H. came to this city and for five years was employed as assistant cashier in the last named bank and afterward held the office of deputy county treasurer and also city treasurer for a number of years. In 1872 his father sold his interest in the First National and established the Exchange Bank of Maquoketa, of which Louis H. became cashier, continuing until the death of his venerable parent a number of years ago, when he became president of this bank, remaining such until his demise. In 1874 he was united in marriage to Miss Julia Brown, of this city, who survives to mourn his departure, together with J. L. Sloane, a half brother, and other relatives and friends here.

Relatives from out of town in attendance were: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dunham of St. Augustine, Florida; Mrs. Fred Stuhler, of Monticello, Iowa; Miss Dunham and brother Worth of Wayne, Illinois; Mrs. J. Scott Blackwell and daughter of Muscatine; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fleming of Des Moines; Miss Louise Brown, Frank von Schrader and son of Ottumwa; and Mrs. Kate Tuller and daughter of Rock Island.

The deceased was a man of kindly disposition, generous impulses and honorable in all his transactions. For several years he has been in poor health, yet able to be out and down to the bank most of the time. On Saturday, the day preceding his death, he walked over to Dr. Bowen’s office, several blocks away feeling quite as well as usual and his last and final illness was a surprise to his physician and friends. The funeral occurred from the residence on Pleasant Street, Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 3 p. m. under charge of the Masonic order of this city, of which deceased was a member in good standing. Rev. S. Shepherd of the Congregational Church conducted the services with interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Notwithstanding the heavy rain at the funeral hour a large number were in attendance at the last sad rites.
