OBITUARY

Died at Maquoketa, Dec. 27th, after a painful illness of nearly six weeks, Mr. NELSON H. WALKER, aged 25. Mr. Walker was born in Russia, Herkimer county, N. Y. At the age of 17 he entered as a clerk the store of the late S. W. Brown, Esq. at Little Falls in the same county, where he remained with the exception of a few months that he served as a clerk in the store of Geo. D. Lyon of the same place, until the spring of ’46, at which time he engaged as clerk for Stacy, and subsequently Stacy & Walker in the city of Utica. In the fall of ’48 he came to Iowa and commenced the mercantile business on a limited scale rather as an experiment. But by good management, strict integrity, and uniform kindness, he had secured the confidence and esteem of the entire community, and with an enlarged stock of goods was prosecuting his business with the most flattering success when arrested by his last sickness. Mr. Walker was a consistent Christian, and a member of the Baptist church, active and useful in the Sabbath school, and an esteemed member of the order of the Sons of Temperance. His death is deeply lamented by all whose happiness was to make his acquaintance.
