George O. DeFoy

Death came suddenly to George O. DeFoy, a leading contractor of Maquoketa, who had been visiting his daughter, Mrs. H. L. Pool, wife of Dr. Pool, at their home, 1013 Lafayette street. He was taken sick with pneumonia a week ago and passed away yesterday afternoon at 1:50.

Mr. DeFoy came to Waterloo last September for an extended visit with his daughter and had been in apparently good health until taken sick with the illness which proved to be his last. As he had resided in Maquoketa and vicinity for nearly forty years, many old friends there will regret to hear of his death.

Deceased was born in Canada, Feb. 19, 1845, and came to the United States in his early manhood, settling on a farm near Maquoketa. On Nov. 12, 1866, he was married to Sarah Ellen Alderman, and in 1870, he moved into Maquoketa, where he had since engaged in the business of contractor.

His wife and children were all with him when the end came. The children are Mrs. H. L. Pool of Waterloo, Mrs. C. A. McMurray of Carter, S. D., Mrs. John Greiner of Chicago, O. L. DeFoy of Chicago, and his stepson, L. A. Alderman, of Winthrop.

The body will be taken tomorrow to Maquoketa, where the funeral will be held on Friday from the Methodist church. Burial will be in the Maquoketa cemetery.
