Maquoketa Record, December 7, 1904.

J. M. Swigart Passes Away.

Josiah M. Swigart, second son of Wm. O. and Martha P. Swigart, was born at Bucyrus, Ohio, April 5, 1854, and died at San Antonio, Texas, where he went about three weeks before hoping to restore health. He came with his parents to Maquoketa in infancy where he has remained ever since, assisting in the publication of the Sentinel since 1868. Like most of the boys he had a notion to see something of the world, and after becoming a printer went on a tramp for experience in that line, having no difficulty in securing work where ever he went. Returning, he and his brother Phil, bought the Anamosa Journal in 1874 and ran it a year, when they sold out and returned to Maquoketa.

He was a college student for a couple of years at Findlay, Ohio, and Fulton, Illinois. When he again returned home and his brother Willard, took the burden of the Sentinel from the father’s shoulders and since that time has been its principle manager.

On May 10, 1876, he married Miss Philena B. Chamberlain. Three children, Carrie, Nettie and Louise were the blessing of this union. He was postmaster during Cleveland’s second administration.

The remains arrived here on Monday morning and the funeral occurred at the residence at 2 o’clock Tuesday. The printers turned out in a body to pay their last respects to the departed. The services were conducted by Rev. Black assisted by Rev. Chandler. The Odd Fellows, of whom he was a member, attended as a body and conducted services at the grave in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
