George Mitchell Dies Following Brief Illness
Funeral Services Will be Held Saturday for Prominent Resident

George L. Mitchell, 82, prominent Maquoketan, passed away at his home on West Pleasant street Thursday morning at 7:10 o’clock following a ten days illness of a heart ailment.

The body was moved to the Buchner chapel where it will repose until Saturday afternoon when funeral services will be held at 2:30 o’clock at the family home with Rev. F. C. Snyder, pastor of the Congregational church, officiating. Interment will be made in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Mr. Mitchell was born in Maquoketa on June 18, 1858, a son of Pierce and Mary Mitchell. He graduated from the Maquoketa high school and in his early manhood was employed at his father’s dry goods store in Maquoketa. In later years he was a prominent banker here serving as president of the First National bank for many years. He was active in the Congregational church of which he was a member and also in various lodge work. Mr. Mitchell was also a representative for this district in the Iowa legislature a number of years ago.

Left to mourn his loss are his widow, the former Jennie Squiers; one daughter, Mrs. Harriet Avery of Rochester, New York; two grandsons, George and James Avery of Rochester, N. Y.; and a sister, Mrs. Chas. von Schrader of Maquoketa besides nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
