Eliza Stephene McMeans was born at Leesburg, Ohio, March 17, 1841 and died at her home in Maquoketa, Iowa, December 26, 1907, of apoplexy.
She came with her father’s family to Iowa in 1844 and grew to womanhood in Maquoketa receiving her education at Maquoketa Academy and Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa.
Following this she taught in the public schools in Jackson County for several years. She was married to J. W. McMeans, Nov. 30, 1865. To this union two children were born: Frank E. McMeans of Davenport, Iowa and Mrs. Blanche Carstens, of Boston, Mass. In addition to her children and grandchildren she leaves her husband J. W. McMeans two brothers and her aged father to mourn her untimely end.
By her kindly life and gentle manners she endeared herself to all who came within her circle of friends. Her place in the church and the Ladies club will be hard to fill.
In early life she united with the Methodist church in Maquoketa and later with her husband united with the Congregational church in Monticello.
Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Rev. A. T. Foster of the Methodist church officiating, following which her remains were tenderly laid to rest in the beautiful Mt. Hope cemetery.
