Sarah Jane Beaver Dies at Daughter’s Home Wednesday

One of Maquoketa’s finest citizens and oldest residents, Mrs. Sarah Jane Beaver, 87, was called by death at 3:40 o’clock Wednesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mildred Arbuckle, on East Pleasant street, with whom she had made her home for the past three and one-half years. Mrs. Beaver had not been in the best of health for about three years and for the past seven weeks had been confined to her bed. Of a kind and loving disposition, her home and family was her first consideration and she will be suddenly missed by all who knew her.

Sarah Jane Webb Beaver was born in Maria, Essex county, New York on February 22, 1850, the daughter of Hilon and Mary Webb. When a small child she came with her parents from New York by the canal to Chicago, Ill., where they entrained to Galena, Ill., covering the rest of the distance by covered wagon to Maquoketa. With the exception of several years residence in Maquoketa she had lived on a farm east of town, most of her life.

On June 23, 1869, she was united in marriage to Levi Beaver in Jackson county, who was a Civil war veteran and who preceded her in death 19 years ago. To this union nine children were born, five of whom survive, four daughters, Mrs. Maude Gibson, Mrs. Mildred Arbuckle and Mrs. Mable Taylor, all of Maquoketa and Mrs. Violet Miller of Des Moines, and one son. Hilon Beaver, living east of Maquoketa. Three children died in infancy and one son, William Beaver, passed away 11 years ago. Nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at the Harrison funeral home at two o’clock Saturday afternoon, Rev. H. H. Dell pastor of the Methodist church officiating, interment will be made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
