DIED
Our old and esteemed neighbor, John Woods, Esq., died quite suddenly last Saturday, July 15, at the home of his youngest daughter, Mrs. Mary Nichols, in Woodbury County. He had been visiting among relatives for several weeks, trying to recruit his failing health. He was able to be up and around the house until about 12 o’clock last Saturday, when alarming symptoms set in and in two hours the struggle was over. A doctor had been summoned but had not arrived when death came. C. L. Woods received a telegram Saturday evening that his father was ill and started immediately for Woodbury County, reaching the Nichols place Sunday and accompanied the aged wife and remains to Maquoketa, reaching here Tuesday morning. A large number of relatives and friends of the deceased were awaiting at the depot and escorted the remains of the revered old man to the Esgate School House, where funeral services were held, conducted by Rev. Stevens of Sabula, and the body laid away to rest in the Esgate Cemetery. John Woods was born February 21, 1812, at Clermont, Ohio. Came to Maquoketa in the fall of 1850 and settled on the land three and a half miles north, which has been his home ever since. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and will be sadly missed in this locality. Mrs. Woods will find a home with her grandchildren, J. W. Ellis and family.
