Grand, Good Woman is Called to Her Reward Saturday Morning

After an illness, extending over several months, Mrs. Fannie Goodenow, wife of the late Osceola Goodenow, passed away at her home on South Matteson avenue last Saturday morning at five o’clock. The death of Mrs. Goodenow marks the passing of one of Maquoketa’s grandest women and one of the city’s best citizens. All through the years of her useful life, an opportunity to do good, never knocked at her door in vain; no vein of pretentious display coursed thru her body and her every good work was from the heart. Our city, its churches, its clubs, it educational and uplifting institutions are impoverished by her death, but these various activities were greatly enriched by her life. She leaves a grand heritage; a splendid example and a name that will always be revered in the community which she loved and served so well.

Mrs. Fannie C. Goodenow was born in Media, Pa., April 4, 1853, and received her education in the public schools and at Rockford seminary. In 1872 she was united in marriage to Osceola Goodenow, who passed away several years ago. To this union were born three children. Mrs. Carlota Young, John E., and Mrs. H. A. McIntire, all of this city. Besides these children, Mrs. Goodenow is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Burguess of Miami, Ariz.; Mrs. Dorchester of Anaconda, Wash.; Mrs. W. Cundill and Mrs. John Nitzsche of this city. Also one brother, Horace Cassin of Delmar.

Mrs. Goodenow was an active member of the Congregational church, of the P. E. O, and Woman’s Club, and for many years was a member of the Library Board.

Relatives and friends from out of town who attended the funeral are: Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Cassin, son Percy, of Delmar, Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Dye of St. Paul, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lahmeyer, Mr. and Mrs. Geo Kranz, Mrs. Hooker Dorchester, Mr. and Mrs. Diedrich Lahmeyer, Mrs. Herman Ahlers and daughters, Misses Clara and Adele, of Bellevue, and Mrs. A. M. Price of Dewitt.

The funeral was held from the late home Monday afternoon, Dr. Morgan of the Congregational church officiating. Interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
