Died.

LOCKWOOD – Hiram Lockwood was born in Warrensburg, N. Y. May 16, 1828, and died in Maquoketa, Iowa, Nov. 5, 1906, aged 78 years, 9 months and 19 days.

In 1851, in the 24th year of his life, Mr. Lockwood came west and located in Jackson county, Iowa, making his home with his sister, Mrs. S. S. Wright, at Wright’s corners for a couple of years and then filing on a claim of wild land about six miles southwest of Maquoketa, he resided here until in 1887, he retired from active life and located in Maquoketa, where he continued to reside until the end.

On April 13, 1856, he was united in marriage with Miss Harriet J. Bentley, his helpmate who shared with him all the hardships of those early pioneer times, helped him subdue the wild prairie farm and make the comfortable home for later years, and carefully tended to his necessities as age brought feebleness and disease and finally the end. To this union were born three children, two sons and one daughter, the younger son, Edgar S., deceased in 1883, in his 17th year of his age.

Brother Lockwood united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Elwood, Iowa, together with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hand, in 1883. His religious life was marked with earnestness and sincerity and he was specially interested in Sunday School work, being of the opinion that that was the most promising field for Christian work.

His death marks the departure of another pioneer of Jackson county. He leaves to mourn his loss, the wife of his youth, his eldest son, D. F. who resides on the old homestead, and his only daughter Mrs. Ella M. Hand of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, who lies critically ill in her home and one brother, Martin, residing near Elwood, Iowa.

The funeral services were conducted from his late residence in Maquoketa, on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 7th by Rev. L. L. Lockhard, assisted by his long time neighbor and friend the Rev. D. F. Boomershine. Interment by the side of the body of his son in Union Church cemetery, Clinton County, Iowa.
