Death Summons a Grand Good Woman

Once again death has made inroad into one of our homes and taken from our midst one of the city’s most esteemed citizens, Mrs. Joseph Whitfield, she passing away at her home on N. Main street, at 10:30 o’clock last Friday evening after an illness of but a few days. Mrs. Whitfield had not been in good health for some time, but her condition was not of a nature to cause alarm, but several days before the end came she suffered a recurrence of heart trouble and steadily failed until death. Mrs. Whitfield was one of those mothers of which communities are justly proud. She loved her home and all that was therewith connected, not unmindful in expressing that loyalty and esteem for the many friends whose friendship she had won by her noble character, kindly ways and devotion to all that was good and uplifting. Born in Maquoketa March 14, 1855, she had always made this city her home residing in the First Ward during her entire life. On December 27, 1876, she was united in marriage to Joseph Whitfield, one of our early settlers and business men and who preceded her in death about nineteen years ago.

To this union were born seven children, three of whom survive and who today mourn the irreparable loss of a dear mother, they being Miss Jessie at home; Mrs. Oscar Fallang of Big Timber, Mont., and Harry J., of Cedar Rapids. Also four grandchildren and left to mourn a devoted, loving “grandma.”

For many years she had been a member of Pope Rebecca Lodge and St. Mark’s church and her helpfulness and counsel was highly valued in all the various activities of these organizations. The funeral was held from the late home this Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev. W. M. Purce of the Episcopal church officiating. Interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
