T. J. Hayes Dies

Thos J. Hayes of this city passed away Thursday morning at 10:20 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Ryan on South Main street, after an illness of eleven days.

The deceased was born in Huntington county, Pa., March 10, 1841, and died on his 80th birthday. He was a veteran of the civil war, serving as a member of the 46th Illinois volunteers for three years. He was married to the wife, who is left to mourn his departure, 55 years ago, and to this union two children were born, Mrs. Geo. Ryan of this city, and Mrs. Elmer Ely of Chicago. He has two brothers and one sister, J. B. of Des Moines, R. C. of Omaha, and Mrs. M. E. Darling of Cincinnati.

Thos. Hayes was a faithful employee of the Milwaukee road, he having been with that company since 1865, and has been agent at this place since his arrival here in 1879. A telegram received by his wife from headquarters in Marion shows in what esteem he was held. It reads:

Marion, Ia. 3-10-21

Mrs. T. J. Hayes,

Maquoketa, Ia.

Be comforted by the thought that

all of the old employees who

have been associated and have

known your husband intimately

during his long years of service

with this company grieve with

you. We all knew him as a

faithful and loyal employee and

his pleasing and gentle disposition

made friends of all whom

he was associated with.

C. H. MARSHALL

At the time of going in press the date of the funeral had not been named, but the indications are that it will be held some time Sunday.
