BELLEVUE, Iowa -- John F. Gschwendtner, MD, 68, of 2145 St. Catherine Road, Bellevue, died suddenly on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at home.Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Raphael's Cathedral, Dubuque. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a prayer service at 8 p.m.
Dr. Gschwendtner was an ENT surgeon and department head, specializing in head and neck surgery, with Medical Associates from 1971 through retirement in 2000.
He was born on May 16, 1939, in St. Marys, Pa., to John I. and Gerard (Fleming) Gschwendtner. He married Louise Ellenberger on Dec. 28, 1963. They celebrated 44 years of marriage together on Dec. 28, 2007.
He was a graduate of Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., and Temple University Medical School, Philadelphia, Pa. He completed his internship at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown, Pa., and his residency at The Cleveland Clinic in Otolaryngology.
He served as a captain in the Air Force, stationed in Lubbock, Texas.
He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, a member of the Dubuque County Medical Society, serving as president from 1984 to 1985. Dr. Gschwendtner also was a member of St. Catherine Church and a member of the Dubuque Golf and Country Club.
Surviving are his wife, Louise; two children, Jean (Scott) Diener, of Keller, Texas, and John (Carol) Gschwendtner Jr., of Eden Prairie, Minn.; grandchildren, Bradley, Edward James and Robert Diener, John III and Lydia Gschwendtner and a granddaughter to be born in May.
