Mrs. Mary Trout-Godfrey Passes Away in Tucson, Ariz.

After a valiant battle against overwhelming odds for the past two years, Mrs. Mary Trout-Godfrey passed away at Tucson, Ariz., Friday, June 17. Mrs. Godfrey was born in Maquoketa in 1867, being the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Trout, and her girlhood and young womanhood was spent in this city. She was an accomplished musician and in her younger years was prominent in the musical and literary circles of Maquoketa. After her marriage to Mr. Godfrey she made her home in New York and Chicago, returning to her home city for residence a number of years ago, where she remained until about 1 year ago, when accompanied by her daughter, went to Colorado, thence to Arizona in an effort to regain her health. She seemed to respond to the new climate and great improvement was apparent, but the dread malady had too strong foothold and she began to fail rapidly several days ago and continued to weaken until the end came.

Mrs. Godfrey was a devoted mother and a true friend. She valued her friendships highly and no sacrifice was too great for her to make that her children might take pleasure and comfort. The spirit of true motherhood stood out clearly and this characteristic was one of the most beautiful of her life.

She leaves to mourn their irreparable loss, one son, Charles, and one daughter, Mrs. Donna Miller, who was her mother’s constant companion during the past few years of life; also a little granddaughter, three brothers, George W. Trout of Florida; Charles L., of New York, and J. B. of this city, and one sister, Mrs. W. J. Matthias of Maquoketa. The funeral will be held from the Matthias home at ten o’clock Wednesday morning, Rev. J. G. Morgan officiating. Interment will be made at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
