DIED.

CARNS – At his home one mile west of Andrew, Sunday morning, May 1st, 1881, Samuel Carns, aged nearly 80 years.

Mr. Carns was born at Ligonier, Westmoreland county, Pa., in 1801. He removed with his parents to Mereer county in 1803. Was married in 1823. His wife, with whom he lived over 51 years, died in 1874. She was born in 1807. Mr. Carns and family came to Iowa in the spring of 1853, and have resided here ever since. Mr. and Mrs. Carns were the parents of eleven children – one son and ten daughters – all of whom survived them and have grown to maturity, constituting the heads of some of the best families in the community. Godfrey Carns and Mrs. Elizabeth Benson live in Nebraska; Mrs. Kate Hazen in Kansas; Mrs. Alice Livingston and Mrs. Millie Rhodes in Pennsylvania; Mrs. P. H. Burnette, Mrs. Jane Littlefield, Mrs. E. A. Strain, Mrs. Austin Hamilton and Miss S. S. Carns reside in this county; Mrs. Mary A. Bowen in Butler county, this state. Mr. And Mrs. Carns were connected with the Disciples Church in Pennsylvania. Since removing to Iowa, Mr. C., though living an exemplary life, was not connected with any church. Mr. Carns was a man of sterling worth and undoubted integrity. Just and considerate in word and action, he won the esteem of all who knew him, and at a good old age he passes on to the achievement and enjoyment of still greater good in the future.
