STANLEY. – Belle Wilson Smith was born in Governeur, St. Lawrence county, N. Y., May 11th, 1849. At the age of 24 she married E. Volney Gates in Philadelphia, N. Y. After marriage they returned to Canada where their oldest child was born. In November, 1876, she removed to Iowa taking up her residence in Maquoketa, which was her home until the last. To them were born two daughters, Leonora L. and Pearl E.

Mr. Gates died in Feb. 1894, and in 1898 she married Mark R. Stanley, who, with her daughters, Leonora L Mower and Pearl E. Tinker, survive her. Of her paternal family survive, two brothers, Elias M., and Frank C. Smith, also one sister, Louisa A. Hail, all living in Oklahoma.

About two years ago she was attacked by the dread disease which terminated her life. After months of patient suffering, which was sweetened by the untiring care and devotion of her daughter, Lenora, she entered into rest on Sunday, Feb 19th, at 3:30 p.m. in the presence of her husband and children.

Mrs. Stanley was a person of sweet disposition and had a host of friends who brightened her illness with continual remembrances of flowers and other tokens of friendship, and to whom the grateful thanks of her husband and children are given.

The funeral services took place at her late residence on Olive Street, on Wednesday, Feb. 2nd, at 2 p.m., and was conducted by Rev. Malcolm Dana.
