Jackson Sentinel, January 24, 1885.
John Thomas Waterhouse, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died at Honolulu, Sandwich Islands, a few days ago, aged 80 years. He was a native of England, came to America at an early day, passed on to the Pacific islands where he engaged extensively in shipping and merchandising. His physicians advised him, if he wished to avoid consumption, to locate in Honolulu, which he did. His great energy and business capacity found vent in business enterprise, in which he amassed a fortune of more than a million, which is left to his several children. His wealth consists of property in England, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, San Francisco, and Honolulu. Capt. G. B. Heustis of Maquoketa, Iowa, was well acquainted with Mr. Waterhouse and also his friend Henry Dimond, who died in Honolulu a few weeks before. The Captain used to meet them when he was on the sea and made long stops at the Sandwich Island ports. The lives of Waterhouse and Dimond and their very successful fortune hunting expeditions among the half civilized people of the far away Pacific islands would read like the tales of Jules Verne, could they be accurately written.
