Mrs. John Matthews, one of the old pioneer settlers of Iowa, passed away at her home in the Fourth ward just before midnight Saturday, May 31. Anna Spencer was born at Lundy’s Lane, near Niagara Falls, June 14, 1815. She was married to John Matthews Feb. 2, 1836, and to this union was born nine children, five of whom, Mrs. Gray of Pasadena, Cal., John,Jr. and Cyrus of Sioux City, W. H. of Ada, Minn., and Edwin L. of Minneapolis, survive. She came with her family to Iowa in 1854, living in Jackson and Jones counties the greater part of the time. She was a resident of Anamosa for seventeen years previous to her removing to this city in 1896. She has always enjoyed good health until the last year, but was able to be on her feet until the Sunday previous to her death when she was prostrated and gradually failed until death relieved her. Besides her children she leaves a husband to mourn the loss of a kind and loving wife. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church at 2:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon, Rev. R. D. Parsons officiating.
