Obituary.

Philo Nims was born April 4, 1842; died May 19, 1902. The above is the brief history of the life of a citizen of Churdan. Philo Nims has gone to his eternal home. He was sick at his home in Churdan for several months, but his suffering ended at 12:30 a.m. last Monday. He was a kind husband, an obliging neighbor and an upright citizen. All who knew him feel sad at the thought that he is with them no more. A faithful wife and three sisters are the relatives who live to mourn his passing away. The sisters were unable, on account of sickness, to be present at the sad rites of their beloved brother.

He was laid to rest May 20 in the Churdan cemetery. A goodly number of the veterans of the civil war were present at his funeral to pay their last respects to a brave comrade.

Mr. Nims was a native of the state of New York, emigrating to Maquoketa, Iowa, when a boy, and to Churdan when this city was a “small village on the prairie.” He soon became one of the foremost citizens in the building up of Churdan, remaining such until his death, and his death will be mourned by his neighbors and fellow-townsmen, who all knew the value of his honesty and integrity as a man among men. The sympathy of the community goes out to his sorrowing wife.

Philo Nims enlisted in the War of the Rebellion at Maquoketa, joining Co. B, 6th Iowa Cavalry, and served his country three years. After returning from the war he was married in 1874 to Miss Mary J. Henton, who survives him. As a comrade he was obliging and self-sacrificing; as a soldier he was brave, dauntless and faithful to duty, often winning the praise of his superiors.

The G. A. R. post of Churdan, led by R. G. Seaman, had charge of the funeral.

Soldier, rest, thy warfare’s ended, Life’s last fearful strife is o’er.

Clarion calls and death notes blended

Shall disturb thy rest no more.
