JACKSON SENTINEL, August 21, after a short illness of three weeks, Mr. Thomas Stoughton, aged 70 years, 10 months, 3 days.
Mr. Stoughton was born in Middlesex, Vermont, October 18, 1801. His early days were spent in his native state of Vermont, until he reached his majority, when he removed to northern New York, where he spent many years of his life. In the autumn of 1853, he, with his family, removed to Wisconsin, where he remained one year, when he came to Iowa, where he has since lived up to the time of his death.
In the 21st year of his age, Mr. Stoughton embraced the Redeemer's plan of salvation, when he united with the Baptist Church. Since the date of his conversion to God, extending through a period of about fifty years, he has earnestly and zealously given his heart and hand to his Master's work and cause. His whole life has been marked by true piety, Christian consistency, and high moral integrity. Though he suffered much in his last sickness, his patient trust was in God. The everlasting arms were underneath him. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."
