FLEMING. – Mrs. Meta Fleming was born on August 28, 1845. She was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Christensen Krolgaard, who lived in the northern part of Schleswig, then under the Danish rule. After having received religious instructions, she was confirmed on April 4, 1868, when she became a communicant of the Lutheran church. Accordingly she was brought up in a Christian way. The following years she spent at the home of her childhood until 1872, when she joined Christopher Paulson in marriage. About three years later, they crossed the Atlantic and came to this country bringing their infant child with them, who, however died shortly after their arrival. Their first home in this county was at Sabula, Iowa, from where they went to farming near Sterling and later removed to Teeds Grove. Here her first husband was taken from her side through death, leaving her alone with two small boys. Two years later she was again married to Henry Fleming, and consequently made her home on the latter’s place ever since. To their union were born two sons, but before the younger ones had really grown up, she had seen her husband laid in the grave, who died May 30, 1902. After this there were left to her ten years of widowhood, during which she lived with her sons and managed the placed until two years ago, when she gave it over to her son Albert and retired from active life, but she still made her home with him. As old age advanced she began to feel the effects of the same, which came upon her in the shape of rheumatism, and was therefore more confined to her home and even prevented her from attending her church, in which she kept up her membership to the last. Yet, whenever able she made herself useful about the home and so it happened, that while she was attending to household duties she was suddenly deprived of consciousness by an entirely unexpected attack of apoplexy, on the morning of March 25th. Never regaining consciousness of mind, she continued in this state until Tuesday night, April, 2nd, when the soul departed from the mortal frame. She lived to the age of 65 years, 7 months and 7 days. She leaves to mourn her departure, her four sons: Peter Paulson of Preston, Amos Paulson of Fairfield township; Elmer and Albert Fleming of Miles; one brother, Jerry Krolgaard of Clinton; two sisters Mrs. Celia Fulsang of Maquoketa; Mrs. Anna Fogella of Miles; nine step children and a number of step grandchildren.
