Death Calls One of Our Honored Citizens

After a long and valiant battle against cruel odds, Alderman William Eaton, one of our most highly esteemed citizens, passed away at five o’clock Sunday morning at the hospital in Iowa City where he had been undergoing treatment for several weeks. Mr. Eaton’s health began failing some months ago, but it was hoped that health would eventually return, but the malady seemed to have gained the upper hand, so in early October he was taken to the hospital at Iowa City where he might receive the best care and treatment obtainable. His condition grew steadily worse however, and on Thanksgiving day his sister, Miss Martha, received word that he was sinking and to hasten to his bedside where his two other sisters, Miss Frances of Omaha, and Miss Sibyl of this city, were tenderly looking after every want of their only brother. On Sunday morning the end came and word to this effect was flashed to friends here and a wave of sadness enshrouded the entire city. The remains accompanied by the three sisters, arrived here Monday noon and taken to the old home on South Main street, the home which always meant so much to Will and his devoted sisters.

William Eaton was born May 2, 1860, and had spent almost his entire life in this city, his work, his interest and his support having always been consecrated to his old hometown. Since the death of his parents he with his three sisters, Miss Martha Franc and Sibyl, have resided as a happy family and his jovial disposition and rigid honesty won hosts of friends who now mourn his untimely death. For a number of years he had been a member of the city council and enjoyed being actively engaged in looking after the city’s interests. He was also an honored member of Helion Lodge No. 36. A. F. and A.M. and took an active interest in the Order he loved so well. A charter member of the fire department in which organization he was always esteemed and his death comes as a real blow to the loyal fire fighters with home he enjoyed to associate and assist when duty called.

The funeral will be held from the home Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev. E. Lang assisted by Rev. J. G. Morgan officiated. The committal service will be in charge of the Masonic Order at Mt. Hope cemetery.
