Oldest War Veteran Dead

“Taps” has sounded for Jackson county’s oldest veteran of the Civil war as well as one of the oldest pioneers of this section of the country. Hiram Graves had for many years been a familiar figure in our city and community, always taking an active interest in all patriotic movements, taking distinctive pride in his war record and always ready to “swap” anecdotes with his comrades most of whom however, have preceded him in death.

Hiram Graves was born in New York State March 2, 1833, and at the outbreak of the Civil war enlisted in the 22nd New York Volunteer Cavalry and later in the 2nd Cavalry. He served with honor in many of the most bitter campaigns of the war with the Army of the Potomac and enjoyed reciting incidents associated with his long army experience. He was united in marriage to Miss Maria Scripture in New York, they moving to Iowa in 1869 locating on a farm west of Maquoketa where he passed away at 2 o’clock Sunday morning, March 24. Mrs. Graves preceded him in death 13 years ago. Those who survive are three sons, Hiram Jr., of Missouri; Ralph and Eugene of near Maquoketa.

Funeral services will be held from the Buchner chapel at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. A. W. Sinden officiating. Burial will be made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
