Death of Mrs. David Lynch

On Easter Sunday, March 31, at 4:00 p.m. occurred the death of Mrs. David Lynch at the family homestead in Butler township. Her illness covered a period of four months during which time everything that could be done by medical skill to relieve her suffering was done by the loving attendants at her bedside.

Mrs. Lynch’s maiden name was Margaret McCarthy. She was born in Butler township, Jackson county, Iowa, Oct. 26, 1837, and resided all her lifetime in the vicinity of her birth. On July 16, 1876, she was married to David Lynch at St. Patrick’s church in Garry Owen by Rev. Fr. Kelly.

Ten children and seventeen grandchildren survive. The following children, James and Loretta of Des Moines, Mrs. W. A. Falk and William of Waterloo, Mrs. W. P. Duggan and Joseph of Dubuque, the late Catherine, Mrs. W. A. Sepke of Chicago, John of Bernard, Mrs. Mary McCarthy and Gertrude at home. Besides these she leaves one sister Mrs. Hanna Shea of Chicago and one brother Pat McCarthy of Toledo, Ohio. Her husband, David Lynch, four brothers, John, William, Timothy and Dennis, and two sisters, Kate McCarthy and Mrs. Pat Donovan preceded her in death.

Mrs. Lynch’s death occurred on the anniversary of the death of her daughter Catherine who died on Easter Sunday 1909. The deceased was a devout Catholic and died fortified by the sacraments of her faith. She was a constant member of the Holy Rosary Guild of St. Aloysius church. She endured her suffering with fortitude and resignation. All through her life and even in the shadow of age her constant thought was for the happiness and welfare of those about her. The passing of this devout wife and mother brought sorrow not only in the family circle but around the people of the neighborhood and community where she grew to old age.

The funeral services were held at St. Patrick’s church in Garry Owen, Thursday morning, April 4, Rev. D. P. Mulachy officiating. The pall bearers were her four sons, James, John, Wm. and Joseph, a grandson J. P. Duggan and nephew Earl Burke.
