MAQUOKETA — Ortha S. Cornelius, 96, of Maquoketa and formerly of Andrew, died Friday at the Maquoketa Care Center.

Burial will be in the Andrew Cemetery.

She was born Feb. 25, 1911, in Olivenhein, Calif., to Otta A. and Louisa L. Ehl Koehlert. She married Arthur R. “Art” Cornelius on Aug. 31, 1947, in Maquoketa. He died in 1978. She then moved to Andrew.

She attended grammar school in Encinitas, Calif., and graduated from high school in Oceanside, Calif. She then attended college at the University of Dubuque, Wartburg College and Coe College. She earned a teaching degree.

She taught in rural schools in Jackson County from 1938 to 1948. She was a homemaker and farmed with her husband in rural Jackson County until retirement.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Andrew Petal Pals and the Andrew Senior Citizens Club.

Survivors include one son, Terry (Kim) Cornelius of Maquoketa; one brother, Osborne Koehlert of Oceanside; one sister, Olivia Cornelius of Maquoketa; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

An Orthas S. Cornelius Memorial Fund has been established.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one sister.
