Weekly Maquoketa Excelsior, Feb. 26, 1861:
DIED-
In this City, on Wednesday, 20th inst. at 3 o'clock a.m., of pneumonia, Mr. Daniel Rhodes, aged 65 years, 1 month and 13 days.
Mr. Rhodes had been a resident of this place for fifteen years or more. He was connected with the material interests of this city, and was among its largest property holders. He was converted in God when a lad eighteen years old; and from that time down to the time of his decease was striving, alternating hope and fear to gain the "Land of rest." Mr. Rhodes was conscious of having(particularly within the past three years) departed from his "first love." He was a regular attendant through the series of meetings held in the M.E. Church, during which he sought the Lord earnestly and found him to the lasting joy of his soul. He remarked while sick. "The meetings were timely for him." Scarcely had the meetings closed, ere he met with an accident-the cutting of his foot-which in combination with other diseases, brought him to his bed, where he remained until borne thence by friendly hands to his last earthly resting place-the grave. Had he faults?-let us avoid them. Had he virtues?=let us imitate them; and "treading lightly o'er the ashes of the dead" let each say, "Peace be to his memory."
