Maquoketa Record, May 7, 1907:
Among the old residents of this locality to pass from life recently is JOSIAH SMOLA whose death occurred at his home in this city on Monday of last week at the ripe age of 76 years. He leaves one brother, Wencil Smola, of Monmouth, one sister in Bohemia, and seven children, John L. and W.F.Smola, Mrs. M.Miller, Mrs. L. Rosecrans, Mrs. F.Tubbs, Mrs. L.Brady, all of Maquoketa, and Mrs. E.Z.Sostheim of Chicago. Funeral occurred Wednesday, Rev L.L.Lockard conducting the services, burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Mr. Smola settled in Maquoketa in 1854. Here he lived a life of usefulness and industry, being one of the solid hardworking citizens who helped to build up the city and contributed his share in every way he could as man, as laborer, as citizen, to the prosperity of the place. He was born in Bohemia and came to America in 1854.
