JNO O. SEELEY'S DEATH COMES AS A SUDDEN SHOCK TO THE COMMUNITY.
John O. Seeley, whom our readers all know as "Farmer Buckhorn", met an untimely death at his farm home six miles west of this city Sunday afternoon.
His daughter had driven over from Neighbor Miller's for a Sunday visit at home. When she was ready to return Mr. Seeley started to hitch up the horse when the animal kicked him in the breast, breaking two ribs and affecting his heart action as to cause almost instant death. His only utterance after the fatal blow when he fell to the ground was "help."
He was one of the most conscientious and honorable of men, charitable and kind hearted and his death is greatly bemoaned. Rev D.F.Boomershine supplies us his obituary as follows:
SEELEY-John O. Seeley was born at Conneatville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, January 23, 1853, and died suddenly at his home five miles west of Maquoketa, at 3:30 p.m., June 30, 1907, aged 54 years, 5 months, and 7 days. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1856 and located near Maquoketa where he has since resided, except a few years that he spent in western Iowa and in Louisiana. He was married to Lucena F. Moulton, September 2nd, 1873, and this union was blessed with two daughters, Edith Grace and Eva L., who with the bereaved wife, aged mother, who lived with him, one brother, Dr. William A. of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. John F. Coleman of Hazelton, Iowa, besides a large circle of relatives and friends, survive to mourn his untimely and sudden departure from this life.
Mr. Seeley was known far and near by his many articles contributed to the papers of Maquoketa. He loved nature and the ideal he was able to find in man. He was a good citizen, a good neighbor, a dutiful son, an affectionate and an indulgent father. His familiar articles will be missing in the papers, but most of all he will be missed by his many friends and acquaintances and especially in the home circle where his life and presence meant so much.
Funeral services were held at the home at 2 p.m. and sermon at the Buckhorn Church by the Pastor Rev. D.F.Boomershine at 2:30 p.m. where a very large copy assembled to pay their last earthly tribute to the departed and express their sympathy to the living.
The floral offering was beautiful in designs and cut flowers. Helion Lodge No. 36, A.F.&A.M., of which he was a faithful member for many years, officiated at the grave in the cemetery by the church.
