Obituary.

James A. Davis, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Davis, was born in Marion Co., Indiana, on Jan. 23, 1845, and died at Maquoketa, Ia., of dropsy and heart failure, July 18, 1907, aged 62 years, 5 months and 26 days. He had been ailing for over a year, but his sufferings were brought to a close by his sudden death on last Thursday. With his parents, deceased, came to Iowa by team from Indiana in 1855. They settled at Cascade and there Mr. Davis made his home for many years. On Sept. 6, 1863, he married Miss Ella Gibson, daughter of Mr. Nelson Gibson of this city, at Dubuque, Iowa. To this union were born 10 children of whom four preceded their father in death. On Nov. 8, 1896, Mrs. Davis departed this life. Six children survive – Stephen K., Bert, Gladys, Belle and Mrs. Chas. Seda, all of Maquoketa, and Mrs. Blaine Poole of Trinidad, Col. There are also three brothers and two sisters of the deceased still living.

On Jan 11, 1864, Mr. Davis enlisted at Cascade in 1st Iowa Vol. Cavalry. He was then 18 years of age. Through the remainder of the civil war he served with credit and honor and was honorably discharged at Austin Texas, when his company was ordered out on Feb. 15, 1866.

A barber by trade, for a while he operated a shop at Farley Junction. About twenty years ago he came to Maquoketa and of late years engaged in the barber business in a shop under the Jackson Co. Bank.

In early life he attended the services of the Advent church, being always anxious to have his children religiously nurtured. A kind and honorable citizen, a loving, self-sacrificing father, he will be sadly missed by a large circle of relatives and friends. He was a member of the Cascade post, G. A. R., to the time of his death, never having transferred his membership. May the God of sympathy and love give consolation to the bereaved family.
