Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, Thursday, September 14, 1899
Died.

SUMMERS—Shelton Summers, a resident of the First ward, died early Tuesday morning, September 12th, at the advanced age of 81 years and 1 month. He had been ill a week.

Deceased was born in Indiana, August 9, 1818. He was married May 12, 1834, to Miss Martha Johnson, and in the fall of the same year he came to Iowa, landing in Scott county. Two years later he settled upon a farm six miles west of Maquoketa, and lived there for fifty years, moving into town eight years ago. Besides his widow Mr. Summers is survived by two daughters, Samantha and Mary. Six other children, two sons and four daughters, died before their father. Mr. Summers was highly esteemed as a citizen and neighbor by those who knew him and his departure leaves one less of the old settlers to gather in the approaching reunion. He was a faithful member of the Baptist church and his pastor will conduct the funeral services in that church building at 1:30 Thursday afternoon. Interment will be at Buckhorn.
