J. H. Summers.John Henry Summers was born near Nashville, Jackson county, Iowa, May 12, 1853, and died at his home in Baldwin, Ia., Sunday evening, Feb. 19, 1899, aged 45 years, 9 months and 8 days. He attended the Maquoketa high school and also college at Mt. Vernon. He followed his chosen profession as teacher for eighteen terms in Jackson county. He thereafter followed the vocation of a farmer near Nashville until May 1, 1898 when he, with his family, moved to Baldwin. Feb. 22, 1862, he was united in marriage to Miss Charity A. Current who, with three daughters, Olive, Harriet and Anna, mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. He is survived by his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Summers of Maquoketa, and two sisters.
Mr. Summers was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason. He was also a member of the Mystic Shrine at Davenport Ia. He and Mrs. Summers were also members of Eastern Star Maple Leaf Chapter, No. 175, of Maquoketa. Mr. Summers was also a member of the Modern Woodmen.
He was a thrifty and prosperous farmer and highly respected by all who knew him. He was a man of influence in his community and was elected assessor in his township when his party was largely in the minority and his presence will be missed in many places.
Funeral services were held in Baldwin in the M. E. church on Feb. 22, members of the various orders to which he belonged attending in a body. Rev. D. F. Boomershine officiated.
Tancred Commandery of the Knights Templars acted as guards at the services, while the service at the grave was under the auspices of the Blue Lodge whose beautiful burial service was used. Interment in the Buckhorn cemetery.
The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
