Monmouth, Feb, 9, 1949- Friday evening, January 28, 1949, Hugh Jas. Mallicoat passed away. His death came as a distinct shock to his family, relatives and friends in this community.
Hugh James Mallicoat was the oldest son of James A. and Ella Gray Mallicoat. He was born on a farm near Ira, in Adair County on February 9, 1885. At the age of seven years the family moved to a farm three miles east of Wyoming, Iowa. He attended the country school and grew to manhood in the Wyoming community. On Sept. 10, 1910, he was united in marriage to Ethyl Edwards of Monmouth at the First Baptist Church by Rev. George Rogers. Their married life began on an old home farm where three sons were born to the couple.
In March 1932 the family moved to Monmouth where they have since resided and where the departed was gainfully employed by the Hurst Produce Company.
The departed husband and father leaves to mourn, his wife and two sons, Harold and Howard of Cedar Rapids, and a brother Russell of Mt. Vernon, Iowa. A son, Gordon preceded him in death on June 8, 1945.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 31, at the Carson-Balster Funeral Home. with the Rev. Howard E. Bell officiating. He was a member of Keystone Lodge No. 206 of Wyoming. Masonic services were given by Mr. Cornish of Maquoketa and organ music was rendered by Mrs. Maurice Powers. He was laid to rest in the Monmouth Cemetery. Pallbearers were brother Masons John Bramer, Henry Bramer, Albert Buck, Lee Allen, Thomas Caraway and Howard Gee. Flowers were in charge of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Gilmore and Mr. and Mrs. Marx Andresen.
