Death On Monday Of Eugene Elliott Tinker.
Late yesterday afternoon(October 19, 1903) occurred the death of Eugene Elliott Tinker, well-known and highly respected resident of this city(Redlands, California). The cause was immediately due to heart failure and a hemorrhage.
His family was of excellent descent, his grandfather, John E. Goodenow, being called the "Father of Maquoketa, Iowa", as he was the one who founded the place. Mr. Goodenow was born in Vermont, went to Warren County, New York while quite young and later moved west and located in Iowa, where the city of Maquoketa now stands. He was known as a very public spirited citizen, often giving large tracts of land for the use of the city and the community at large. His death occurred September 2, 1902, at Maquoketa. One of his surviving daughters, Helen C. Tinker, was the mother of Eugene. She lived in her home city nearly all of her life and her son was born there in 1871. He was always known as an exceptionally bright lad and graduated early from the high school there with high honors. He then went into the jewelry business and met with great success. He married and continued his jewelry business in Waseca, Minnesota, giving such close application to business that his health finally failed and he was forced to go to Texas and thence to come to California. He resided for the last eight years in and around Redlands and established his chosen profession here. For a while his health seemed to be better and he gained, but finally there came the long bitter struggle with the fatal disease, death finally claimed his own. Mr. Tinker was 31 years of age and beside the bereaved widow leaves two children of tender years, Paul and Gwendoline Maud. The funeral arrangements have not been made as yet.(Redlands, California newspaper, October 20, 1903)
The funeral took place two days later with interment in the cemetery at Redlands.
