Born in Franklin County, Vermont, in Sept, 1835, deceased remained under the parental roof until 1855, when he moved west to Jackson County, Iowa. After two years brick making in Maquoketa he went to farming, which occupation he has followed ever since, and was always counted a good farmer. He was married to Miss Lydia French in 1854 and to them were born six children, five of whom are living, Rolla, Hattie, George, Harley and Kittie, now Mrs. Richardson, of Adair county. The wife died in 1879 and in 1881 Mr. Rice was married to Miss Martha Stewart of Fairfield Township, who survives her husband. Mr. Rice was a man of exemplary habits, honest in all his dealings and respected by a wide circle of friends who mourn his death. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock a.m. (this) Thursday. Rev. Mr. Rose of LeClaire, assisted by Rev. Bretenell of Preston presided at the last sad rites and the remains were interred in the Union Centre Cemetery.
