Jackson Sentinel, September 29, 1898:
Mrs. E.M.Ballengee, still another of Maquoketa's old settlers, died at Mercy Hospital, Davenport, Friday noon last, from the effects of a surgical operation performed upon her a few days previous. For two years Mrs. Ballengee has been troubled with a tumor caused by a hard fall. About two weeks ago she was taken to Davenport where it was hoped that relief might be gained by submitting to an operation. The patient was not strong enough to bear up under the severe strain imposed, but in the opinion of the physician would not have lived for more than two months longer anyhow. Deceased's maiden name was Harriet Tridle. She was born at Massilon, Ohio, December 24, 1842. There she lived until 1855, when with her parents she came to Mt. Carroll, Illinois. She came to Maquoketa in November 1868, and had resided here ever since. December 24, 1863, she was united in marriage to E.M.Ballengee. To this union were born three children, two of whom, Will and Hattie, survive to mourn the loss of a most kind and affectionate mother. Besides the children there remain the sorrowing husband, the aged and feeble father and sisters. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Congregational Church, the service being conducted by the Pastor, Rev. S. Shepherd. The attendance of sympathizing friends and neighbors was very large.
