Maquoketa Record, June 4, 1907:
Rev. L. L. Lockard was called to Bellevue on Saturday last to assist in the funeral services of Eli Cole, Sr., who departed this life on Thursday. Mr. Cole was an early settler of Jackson County and has led an honorable and useful life, attaining the ripe age of four score years and ten. Some twenty-four years ago when Rev. Lockard was pastor at Bellevue, he laid to rest, the partner of Mr. Cole's joys, hardships and sorrows and he now pays the same tribute to his good and faithful friend.
