Joseph Sadler was born at Hudson, Ohio, September 23, 1831, died at his home, Elwood, Iowa, May 15, 1907. Mr. Sadler came to Iowa in October 1852, and settled in Jackson County. He was married to Mrs. Ellen Ballou, in December 1857, who preceded him to the great beyond in February, 1892. In November, 1893, he was again united in marriage to Mrs. Sophia Woods of Kansas, who still survives him. He leaves besides his wife, seven children by his first wife to mourn his death, namely, Amaza, Frank, Oscar, Columbus and Mrs. Retta McFarland of Woodbury County, Iowa, Wm. of Nebraska and Milton on the home farm near Elwood. He also leaves nineteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild, besides three brothers and two sisters, William Sadler of Centerville, Michigan, John of Grant, Iowa, Albert of Kansas, Mrs. S.Roush and Mrs. J.J.Ogden of Maquoketa. Mr. Sadler whose health had been declining for nearly a year, was stricken with paraysis on Feb. 8, 1907, from which he failed to rally, but lingered a patient sufferer until death ensued as above stated.
Mr. Sadler moved in 1860 on a large farm in Clinton County, where he united with the M.E.Church, in early manhood, was ever a true Christian, and an honor to the church of his choice. Funeral services were conducted at the Elwood Church by his pastor, Rev. Kidder, with interment in the Elwood Cemetery, by the side of his wife, there to await the resurrection.
