Maquoketa Record, Nov.14,1906:
Hiram Lockwood was born in Warrensburg, New York, May 16, 1828, and died in Maquoketa, Iowa, Nov.5, 1906. Came to Iowa in 1857. Settled on a farm six miles south-west of Maquoketa where he resided until 1887 when he moved here. April 13, 1865, he married Harriet J. Bentley, who survives. Two children of this union survive him. They are Duane F. who resides on the old homestead, and Mrs. Ella M. Hand, of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, who by reason of severe illness was unable to be here to the funeral which occurred on Wednesday last being conducted by Rev. L.L.Lockard of the M.E.Church, assisted by Rev. D.F.Boomershine with interment in Union Church Cemetery. Mr. Lockwood was a sturdy pioneer, one of the men who endured with fortitude and courage the privations of subduing the Iowa prairies making them to blossom as the rose. He became a Christian and died firm in the faith. He practiced the principles of religion in his daily life and was respected by all who knew him. A loyal friend, kind neighbor, and honest man has gone to the reward of the good and true.
