Maquoketa Record, July 12, 1905:
Amanda J. Hayes was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, over seventy years ago. She was married to Israel Hayes in 1853, and in 1868 they came to Iowa to settle in Andrew where they lived with their family until she left for the other shore in the morning of July 5th while sleeping peacefully. She is mourned by her aged husband, three sons and one daughter. Her life was filled with many hardships and trials until the end. The care of a grandchild. only a baby, for the past ten months, was too great a tax upon her vital system. She has passed beyond these trials of life for sunnier skies. Funeral services were held in the M.E.Church Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Bretnell.
