Maquoketa Record, January 31, 1906:
The many friends of Mrs. Rhoda Merrit will regret to learn of her death at Hammond, Louisiana, on the 19th. She was stricken with paralysis on the evening of the 17th, and remained conscious for about an hour, when she sank into a deep sleep, passing quietly away at 6:30 on the morning of the 19th. The funeral was held on the 20th inst. Mrs. Merrit will be remembered by many of the old settlers of Maquoketa, where she resided for many years. Some sixteen years ago she removed to Hammond, Louisiana, with her sister and husband, A.H.Humeston, both invalids, in quest of a more congenial climate. They were her charge and most faithfully did she care for them until death came to them, a few years ago. Since then she has been doing the best she could to be useful and maintain herself on what was left of the Humeston estate, until she lays down the work and struggles and disappointments of this life and passes on to where the just and virtuous are rewarded.
