J. H. MOHLENHOFF, ANDREW MERCHANT, DIES AT AGE OF 85
J. H. Mohlenhoff, 85, Andrew grocer and prominent citizen of this community for the past 70 years, died Monday evening in his home following a brief illness.Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon from the Carson funeral home in Maquoketa to Salem Lutheran church at 2 p.m. The Rev. Max Diemer, pastor, will officiate and interment will be made in the Andrew cemetery.
Mr. Mohlenhoff was born Nov. 1, 1870, in Dimahassen, Germany, a son of John F. and Anna Marie Hake Mohlenhoff. He came to the United States at the age of 16 and has resided in the Andrew community since. On Apr. 25, 1906, he was married in Andrew to Johanna R. Tebben. She survives him.
A member of the Lutheran church, he was active in the Brotherhood. He was owner and manager of the Andrew Telephone company, president of the Andrew Savings Bank, treasurer of the Andrew school district and a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. Mr. Mohlenhoff retired from active management of the family grocey here several years ago. His son, Harold, has since managed it.
In addition to his widow and son, Harold, he is survived by another son, Donald at DeSmet, S. Dak., three daughters, Miss Marjorie of Lansing, Mich., Miss Berniece of New York City and Mrs. Arlene Rohlf of Huntingdon Valley, Pa.; one sister, Mrs. Anna Ehlers of Andrew; and five grandchildren. A son, Leroy, a brother and two sisters preceded him in death.
