MAQUOKETA — Doris D. Round, 88, of Maquoketa, died Saturday at the Maquoketa Care Center.
She was born Dec. 23, 1918, in Maquoketa to John V. Wilson and Blanche Applegate Wilson. She married James M. “Jimmy” Round on Feb. 11, 1939, in Maquoketa. He died in 1999.
She was a 1936 graduate of Elwood High School and then graduated from Maquoketa Junior College in 1938 with a teaching degree. In 1971, she obtained a bachelor’s degree in teaching from Marycrest College.
Prior to her marriage, she taught in Spragueville. She was a homemaker and then resumed her teaching career in Hurstville. In 1962, she began teaching at Briggs Elementary School, Maquoketa, until retiring in 1982.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Maquoketa; the Jackson County Historical Society; and was a 60-plus-year member of the Maquoketa American Legion Auxiliary. She also was a charter member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Survivors include her children, James “Jim” (Carol) Round of Maquoketa, Steve (Norma) Round of Maquoketa and Claudia Round of Beaverton, Ore.; one brother, J.V. (Dawn) Wilson of Solana Beach, Calif.; one sister, Evelyn (Don) Keith of West Liberty; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one son.
