DEATH OF MAIL CARRIER
This community was greatly shocked last Friday when word was received of the sudden death of Will Evans, mail carrier, which occurred at Oskaloosa, Friday, following a stroke of paralysis Thursday evening.
Mr. Evans was born in Canada in 1861. On February 18, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Flora Stoughton, who died May 27, 1910. To this union were born seven children, five of whom survive.
On last Monday, November 23, he was married to Mrs. Florence Zaring at Oskaloosa, Iowa, and they were preparing to return to this place when he was suddenly stricken, and what he and his new wife had anticipated as a time of happiness was suddenly turned into one of the saddest affairs of life.
The deceased had been a member for over thirty-five years of the Free Methodist church of this city, of which he was a consistent and faithful member. No weather was too stormy or cold to keep him from any service of the church and he never failed to respond to any call for help. At the time of his death he was the superintendent of the Sunday school, church treasurer and held several other important offices. This church will miss a faithful member, who was always at his post of duty and not only gave of his time but also of his finances to the cause he loved.
He was the oldest member of the rural carrier force at the postoffice, both in age and years of service, and was to be retired on pension next July. His close associates, especially, have always had a good word for "Big Bill" and the general public knew him as a splendid citizen and right living man.
He is survived by his wife, five children, Mrs. Warren Shady, Claud, Cecil and Byron of Maquoketa, and Elza of Anamosa; one brother, George, and one sister, Mrs. Maud Hull of Portsmouth, Iowa, and fifteen grandchildren.
The funeral will be held this Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the home and 2:30 at the church, his pastor, Rev. C.M. Cunningham officiating, with interment in Mt. Hope cemeter.
