TAPS SOUND FOR ANOTHER CIVIL WAR VETERAN
The ranks of the old Grand Army were again broken last Thursday when Joseph Brady passed away at his home on South Main street after an illness of several months. Mr. Brady was one of thos grand old gentlemen who had devoted his entire life to usefulness and until advanced age overtook him was active in the work of building a bigger and better community. Born in Lawrence county, Penn., August 14, 1838, he came at the age of 16 by boat to Davenport, Iaowa, and soon joined his brothers, John and Robert, on their farm south of this city, later moving to Oxford where he remained until the outbreak of the Civil War. In 1861 Mr. Brady enlisted in the National Guard at Davenport and as soon as his company had reached the required numerical strength, went to Iowa City and was mustered into service Sept. 28, 1861, assigned to the 14th Iowa Infantry and later transferred to the 7th Iowa Cavalry. After his term of service had expired Mr. Brady re-enlisted remaining into the service until February 1866, when he was honorably discharged, receiving two promotions during his service for the Union.
After his discharge he returned to Clinton county and engaged in farming which he followed until March 1894, when he came to this city where he had since resided. He was united in marriage to Carolina Gearhart on June 19, 1867, and to this union five children were born, three of whom with the devoted wife survive. One child died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Ida E. Stamen passed away a few years ago. Those surviving are Mrs. Jennie Stamen of Delmar and J.W. and Dick of this city. Twenty grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two brothers, William of Emeline and Harmon of Anamosa, are also left to mourn the loss of a grand good man.
The funeral was held from the late home Saturday, interment being made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
