HENRY LEHMKUHL OBITURARY
Funeral services for the late Henry Lehmkuhl were held Sunday afternoon with prayer at the home at 12:45 and service at the Reformed church at 1:00 o'clock. A large number of friends and relatives were present to pay their last respects to one who had lived among them a quiet consistent life. Though he was of a retiring nature he was a man of splendid integrity and uprightness of character.
Henry Lehmkuhl was born Nov. 13, 1847 in Wismar, Mecklenberg, Germany, and died at his home in Maquoketa February 12, 1925 from the effects of a stroke which he suffered the previous week.
In 1857 he came with his parents to America, living for a short time in Illinois, not far from Davenport. From there they moved to near Preston which was their home for a number of years, then nine years were spent in Ida county near Holstein, when they returned to Jackson county and purchased a farm near Preston, living there until 1911 when he retired from active farm live and moved to Maquoketa to spend his remaining days. On March 23, 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Neiland and to this union were born nine children, four of whom preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife and five children, Fred of Agar, South Dakota, William J. of Plankaton, South Dakota, Mrs. Alma Steingarber of St. Paul, Minn. and Mrs. Martha Easton of Portage, Wis., all of whom were here to attend the funeral; 32 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Mary Meyer of Holstein, Ia., and four half brothers of Moville, Ia. two of whom, Chris and John Winx came to attend the funeral.
Two years ago on the 23rd of March, Mr. and Mrs. Lehmkuhl celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. E.A. Hanff, pastor of the Lutheran church of Andrew, assisted by Rev. D.F. Boomershine and interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
