MAQUOKETA — Norbert J. “Papa Smurf” Wagner, 80, of Maquoketa, died Monday at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa

He was born Sept. 13, 1926, in Bellevue to William John “Bill” and Elizabeth Olsem Wagner. He married Marie Franzen on May 27, 1957, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa.

He farmed and worked with Clinton Engines, Maquoketa, and later worked in maintenance with Red Jacket before retiring in 1990.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Korene (Mike) Shady of Andrew; three sons, Kenneth (LuAnn) Wagner and Keith (Sue) Wagner, both of Maquoketa and Karl (Carol) Wagner of LaMotte; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eileen Prindle and Armella Ilg, both of Maquoketa and Jeanette (Jerry) Ilg of DeWitt; two brothers, Eugene (Loretta) Wagner of Sun City, Ariz., and Orville (Pat) Wagner of Delmar; and one sister-in-law, Connie Wagner of Preston.

Memorials are preferred.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
