Obituary- Charles E. Griffin.
The community was shocked Monday morning when relatives and friends learned of the sudden death of Chas. E. Griffin, who died Monday morning at 6:00 a.m. at the hospital in Clinton, where he had gone Saturday afternoon for treatments. The remains were removed to the McNamara Funeral Home in Anamosa and due to the condition of the roads the wake and funeral were held from the home of his brother, Dr. Griffin at Baldwin.
He was born Nov. 25, 1890, the son of the late Anthony and Mary Griffin and had resided on the same farm since he was three years of age. He graduated from the Monmouth high school, attended Loras college in Dubuque, and taught school three years then returned to the home farm to assist his father.
On June 1, 1931, he was married to Mary Josephine Kinsella, the daughter of Michael and Nora Kinsella at St. Aloysius Church at South Garryowen. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of the DeWitt Council, the Rosary Society, and the Sacred Heart League.
The funeral, which was very largely attended, was held on Thursday morning at the Holy Trinity Church in Baldwin, at 9:30 o'clock with Fr. Gregor of Oxford Junction celebrating the solemn requiem high mass assisted by Fr. Mullen of Maquoketa and Fr. Schmitz of Andrew. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery with Paul Ralston, Joe Edwards, Cyril O'Hara, Raymond and Lyle Ford and Harry Kedley being the pall bearers.
Surviving are his wife, three sons, daughter, Mary Rita; a brother, Dr. F.L.Griffin of Baldwin; a sister, Sister Mary Evangelista of the Order of Servants of Mary, Cherokee; an aunt, Mrs. Catherine Dolly of Clinton, and an uncle, Simon Griffin of Letcher, S.D.
